September 2014 - What an achievement ! 10 consecutive Green Flag Awards.
This says it all for the ranger team and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain and improve our wonderful country park.
Local councillors Peter O'Neill and Liz Smaje, together with Oakwell staff, Friends and volunteers joined together in August to raise the flag and celebrate the 10th award. A celebratory cake was made and donated by McDonald's - staff members have recently been volunteering at Oakwell.
Let's keep the flag flying .....
September 2012 - How wonderful that in this Olympic year that Oakwell Hall can also announce that we too have won a gold.
This one is from Yorkshire in Bloom in the category Country Houses, Estates and Parks and Gardens. We have had three successive Silver Gilts which in itself is a fantastic achievement, but a gold in this year of all years is just amazing.
Our Cabinet Member for Health Well-Being and Communities, Cllr Jean Calvert, said the following soon after the announcement.
“It is great news that Oakwell Hall Country Park has won gold in this year’s Yorkshire in Bloom. Rangers, staff and volunteers have put in a huge amount of work to get the park in peak condition and it is fantastic that this has paid off in such a wonderful way. This helps create a feelgood factor for everyone who visits and everyone who works there and I am extremely pleased that the park has been honoured with this award.”
Needless to say we are all proud as punch and yet again, it’s been achieved with a lot of hard work, dedication and love for this site from an excellent ranger team, particularly Amanda who has the responsibility for the gardens, with the support of a wonderful team of volunteers, including many hour’s of graft from the Friends over the years.
In recognition of the award and in the tradition of the Olympics this year, we have painted one of our bins gold!
So, in case you’re not sure who’s who, find the photo of the winning team in our gallery - it's the one with the gold bin! From left to right; Patrick Crowley, Amanda Walker and Emma Crowley.
And most importantly, a huge thank you to the Friends and all the volunteers who have given, and continue to give, so much to make Oakwell Hall Country Park such a special place.
Thank you, Eric Brown, Senior Museum Officer
August 2012 - Oakwell Hall has been awarded its eighth successive green flag. Don't they look impressive on the picture?
August 2011: I am delighted to report that we just heard from Visit England that all five museum sites in Kirkless - including Oakwell Hall - have achieved VAQAS (Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme) accreditation.
Inspections took place using VAQAS mystery shoppers over the Easter period. We join 25 sites in West Yorkshire with the accreditation including Harewood House, National Media Museum and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
