Descendant of the Johnny-come-lately occupants of Oakwell - Fairfax Fearnley and his sister, Susannah and family. Susannah accompanied her husband, Benjamin Carlile, an artillery officer, to the American War of Independence, where he fought with distinction from Bunker Hill to Yorktown. Having lost his wife and two of his three children to fever in Boston, Benjamin returned to Oakwell with his only surviving child, my 6xgt grandfather. I noted some very old American sycamore stumps in the grounds, and fancifully entertained the notion that Benjamin might have brought seedlings back from America with him. The "Abbot Extraordinary", Aldred Carlyle (aka Benjamin Fearnley), is a descendant of these inhabitants of the Hall, and my grand-daughter is the latest Fearnley of the line. Lovely place, so peaceful.

We love the website and we hope to visit soon! We are researching my husband's maternal great grandmother's family and have discovered that Oakwell Hall was built by his 13x great grandfather, if we are counting correctly. Amazing!

I am a descendant of Henry Batte. My wife and I plan a trip to the British Isles in the spring of 2012. A visit to Oakwell will be on our agenda. Incidentally, in some family history I have available, the manor house was referred to as "Okewell" - a misspelling perhaps?

I have not visted Oakwell Hall since 1998 so it is nice to be able to have a well designed website to keep up with what is happening. I am one of the descendants of John Batt here in the US. Oldsmar is in the Tampa, FL area. Take care and thanks again for all the efforts.
